I was a principal investigator in this project for Sahana. It investigates the use of pictographs in disaster information systems to understand the challenges for implementing a pictograph-based disaster communication system on mobile phones with the capability to save life and livelihoods in disaster situations. We did field studies in Sri Lanka and the Philippines, working with low-literate and deaf communities.
This is a “recognition grant”, so the aim was to get a substantial understanding of the project. A proposal for further project phases is underway.
